What is a Tsunami
Tsunamis can be terminal. Even the ones that are considered to be 'mild' can leave people with very undesirable after effects. Before we get into the issues that tsunamis can be caused you may be wondering, what in the world is a tsunami? A tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by a large displacement of water.
How is a Tsunami Formed
Now that you know what a tsunami is I'll explain why they happen. Tsunamis are caused by a great disturbance and displacement of the water. Many different things can cause tsunamis, one of those things being an earthquake. When earthquakes happen they release a massive amount of energy. When the earthquake occurs close enough to an ocean it can cause the disturbance and displacement of water that is needed to start a tsunami. Believe it or not volcanoes can also contribute to causing these potentially devastating natural disasters. One way a volcano can cause a tsunami is if the volcano collapses while erupting near an ocean. This would force debris and ash into the ocean which would violation move the water. That would cause a wave that would soon build up to be a tsunami. Landslides can generate tsunamis in a way very similar to how a volcano does. Land that has broken off because of a landslide spews into a n ocean and if the debris is big enough than, like a volcano, it can cause a massive wave that builds and builds until it hits another piece of land. That's the point where the disaster strikes.
How to Detect a Tsunami
For the safety of yourself and others use these tips to help you detect a incoming tsunami:
1) Look out for the unusual receding of water at the beach
2) Pay attention to animals moving away from the area and /or acting strangely- remember animals can sense thing far before/better than we can
3) Strong earthquakes that make it hard to stand or even knock you off your feet are big signs, especially if it lasts for 15 seconds or more.
4) Listen for loud ocean noises such as crashes or roars of big waves. This is a vital sign that a tsunami is coming your way
5) Watch for an abnormally large ocean wave: usually the first wave in a tsunami is not the largest... or last

How to Survive a Tsunami
If your ever caught in a tsunami use these tips to keep you safe and they could possibly save your life one day. Here are the tips:
1) Leave your belongings- save lives not possessions- they will only slow you down and put in more of a risk to be seriously injured or killed by the tsunami
2) Move to higher ground and/or as far away from the coast as possible
3) Flood water is very common. It is very risky and dangerous to try to drive or walk through these floods so listen to rescue officials they will inform you about evacuation plans
